How To Prepare For Your Move

About four weeks before moving day is a good time to keep track of moving expenses for tax purposes. This is also when you should begin transferring services and records. It is often a good idea to have the services begin several days before you expect to arrive at your home for the convenience of having the utilities and telephone working upon arrival. 

Discontinue Services

  • Telephone Company
  • Electric Power Company
  • Water Department
  • Fuel Oil Company
  • Laundry and Dry Cleaning Services
  • Pest Control
  • Garbage Collection
  • Newspaper
  • Internet Provider
  • Cable T.V.
  • Landscaper
  • Post office - change of address

Transfer Records

  • Bank
  • Legal
  • Insurance Companies
  • Auto & Driver's License
  • Medical: Doctors & Dentist
  • Pet Immunizations

Miscellaneous Items

  • Hold a garage sale to sell unwanted items. This will save you the expense of transporting them.
  • Defrost and clean refrigerator/ freezer at least two days in advance of move.
  • Have curtains and carpets cleaned.
  • Drain all gasoline-powered equipment.

On Moving Day

  • Make the foreman aware of any items that are fragile or need special handling. All fragile articles should be boldly marked.
  • Complete a walk through of your house to ensure that everything has been loaded.
  • Confirm that the driver has your exact destination address.
  • When the crew has finished unloading, please check that you have all of your items. If you are unsure, please feel free to inspect inside the truck.
